Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1966 as a refuge for wintering migratory waterfowl and other bird life. The Discovery Center at the Refuge provides a place for refuge volunteers to meet visitors and answer questions inside a modern facility. The Discovery Center includes a classroom/laboratory facility for the Discovery Environmental Education Program (DEEP).
Tour participants should park at the Discovery Center. From there, participants will join Ed Hunter in a 12-passenger van to visit areas of the refuge rarely seen by the general public. Ed is an experienced guide with extensive knowledge of the refuges. This trip may require walking as far as one mile. Many of the back roads in the refuge are unimproved, and heavy rain may cause route changes.
In past years, visitors have seen Nelson's Sharp-Tailed Sparrow, White-Phase Reddish Egrets, short-eared Owls, Swamp and Savannah Sparrows.
